Lisgriffin Fortified House
OS 16: 14: 3; OD 400-450ft. North county Cork.
A fortified house situated within pasture overlooking the
Bregoge River valley to the east. The west gable survives to a length of 10m, and there are two short returns; one in the
north wall to 3m and the second on the south wall surviving to 2.5m. The gable stands to three storeys with an attic and all
are over a semi-basement. The top of the remaining walls have a continuous machicolation. The edge coping along the gable
is mostly intact and a chimney stack survives on the gable apex. Three large stones protrude from the exterior north wall
suggesting a bawn wall was attached here. There was a central window in the west wall at ground level it has been robbed or
fallen out. At first and second level are the remains of a window on each floor. All the embrasures are splayed and were once
lintelled, the lintels are now missing. The window on the first floor has a rectangular light and is divided by two mullions
the north mullion is missing and the window is covered by a hood-mould. The second floor window had one mullion, now missing.
There is a central fireplace in the west wall in the attic floor, its lintel is missing; there are small rectangular light
on either side of the flue (attic windows). The house is provided with a gun loop in the north wall. It is tapering and close
to the northwest corner. All floors were wooden and the remains of a scarcement and joist sockets are visible. The Down survey
shows a house and tower on the same location.
